Geoffrey Tattersall QC Retirement Announcement

9th July 2018

Byrom Street Chambers announces the retirement from private practice at the Bar of Geoffrey Tattersall QC. Geoffrey was called to the Bar in 1970 and took Silk in 1992, in which year he also joined these Chambers. He became a Senior Counsel of the New South Wales Bar in 1995 and a Bencher of Lincolns Inn  in 1997. He was also a member of 5 Essex Court Chambers. Geoffrey practised predominantly in personal injury and clinical negligence work in which areas he garnered instructions and excelled in complex and high value claims from a loyal and admiring following of both claimants’ and defendants' solicitors. He also practised in the fields of professional negligence, administrative law, professional discipline and regulation and in ecclesiastical law. His appointments are many and varied; he was appointed a Recorder in 1989, a deputy High Court Judge of the Queen’s Bench Division in 2003 and the Judge of Appeal of the Isle of Man from 1997 to 2017. In the Church of England in which he is an active communicant, he is the Chancellor of the Dioceses of Manchester and Carlisle, Vicar General of the Diocese of Sodor and Man and a member of the Court of Arches. He is a long-standing member of the General Synod of the Church of England and was a Chairman of Clergy Disciplinary Tribunals. Geoffrey’s measured wisdom, cheerful countenance and kindly encouragement have always been much treasured by members of Chambers past and present and his regular presence amongst us will be much missed. Members of Chambers and staff thank Geoffrey for his colossal contribution to the life and reputation of Chambers and wish both Hazel and him every happiness in their retirement together.
