"The clerking team is brilliant: they are very responsive and if a particular counsel can't help they are very proactive in suggesting others who are suitable."

Manchester Arena Civil Litigation Team named Personal Injury / Clinical Negligence Team of the Year

3rd July 2026

Byrom Street Chambers is proud to have been part of the Manchester Arena Civil Litigation Team, which has been named Personal Injury / Clinical Negligence Team of the Year at the Manchester Legal Awards 2026.

The award recognises the work of a collaborative group of claimant law firms and chambers, including Slater and Gordon Lawyers (UK), Hudgell Solicitors, Broudie Jackson Canter, Temple Garden Chambers and Byrom Street Chambers, in relation to the civil litigation arising from the Manchester Arena attack on 22ndMay 2017.

The litigation concerned claims brought on behalf of survivors and bereaved families affected by one of the most serious terrorist incidents in recent UK history, which resulted in 22 deaths and hundreds of injuries, many of them life-changing.

Winston Hunter KC and Simon Kilvington KC, acted for substantial groups of claimants throughout the proceedings, working alongside solicitors and counsel as part of a coordinated, claimant-led team.

The work required sustained collaboration over a number of years across multiple proceedings, including complex issues of liability, causation, and quantum, as well as the ongoing needs of clients who were navigating profound and enduring trauma.

Many of the claims involved vulnerable claimants, including children and protected parties, with court-approved settlements secured following detailed assessment of damages.

Alongside the litigation itself, the wider team supported clients through access to rehabilitation, financial guidance and practical assistance, reflecting a shared commitment to holistic support as well as legal redress.

Nearly a decade on from the attack, the impact continues to be felt by many survivors and families. The recognition at the Manchester Legal Awards reflects not only the legal and procedural complexity of the litigation, but also the commitment shown by all those involved to ensuring that clients’ voices remained central throughout.
