Darryl Allen QC - Causation success in stroke thrombolysis case

19th November 2018

Darryl Allen QC, instructed by Poppy Kilroy of Jackson Lees Solicitors, represented the successful Claimant who suffered devastating neurological injuries as a result of the Defendant’s negligent failure to administer thrombolysis within a reasonable time of the Claimant’s presentation at hospital.  HHJ Bird, sitting as a Judge of the High Court, found that timely administration of thrombolysis would have resulted in the Claimant’s recovery to his pre-stroke level of function: slight disability but independent in his normal day to day tasks [Modified Rankin Scale 2].

The decision contains a very useful analysis of the scientific literature on the benefits of thrombolysis and predicted outcome for specific patient groups, in particular analysis of the DRAGON prognostic tool for predicting stroke outcome for individual patients.
