Byrom Street Chambers welcomes first MMU intern

21st October 2026

Byrom Street Chambers has welcomed its first intern through a new internship programme created in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), building on the scholarships Chambers already sponsors through the University's First Generation programme.

Chambers sponsors two scholarships through MMU's First Generation programme, which supports students who might otherwise face barriers to going to university.

Building on that relationship, Chambers worked with MMU to design its own internship. Each placement gives a Business and Law student a week inside Chambers, with a first-hand view of how a busy set operates day to day.

Asiya Khan, our first intern, spent her week working closely with the clerking team. She was mentored by Kyle Scott, Senior Costs Clerk, who took her through how Chambers receives and manages new instructions, as well as the marketing, financial and commercial sides of running a set.

Alongside the team, Asiya gained an insight into diary management, hearing coordination, case allocation, client relationships, fee negotiation, billing and practice development.

She also had the opportunity to observe a settlement meeting and to attend a hearing at the Manchester Civil Justice Centre, seeing the practical realities of litigation at first hand.

Asiya said: "I gained a real understanding of the work that takes place behind the scenes to support barristers and clients, and the many moving parts involved in running a successful set of Chambers. Everyone was incredibly welcoming, and I am very grateful to Byrom Street Chambers and MMU for the opportunity."

Kyle Scott, Senior Costs Clerk, said: "It was a pleasure to welcome Asiya as our first intern. Much of what makes a set of Chambers work happens away from the courtroom, and opening that up to students who may not otherwise see it is exactly what this partnership is about."

Chambers looks forward to welcoming future interns through the programme and to continuing its support for First Generation students at MMU.
